Church Government

Jesus governs His church by the Word and Spirit. He appoints officers. The first kind of officer is an elder, which is an office of governing, teaching, and shepherding. Additionally, some elders do the work of ministering the Word and sacrament (1 Tim. 5:17). They are called “Teaching Elders”, but the hold the same office as “Ruling Elders”. Together, the teaching elder and ruling elders form the session, the governing body of a local church.

The office of deacon is the second office appointed by Jesus. It is an office of service (Acts 6:1-6). Their main role is to serve the people of the church by meeting needs, mobilizing the congregation to serve, and managing the building and property.
